Plan

To be done:
  • Check the Z4/Z11 relation now that the abovementioned changes have been made.
    • Run dofpia with stringent limit criteria: dofpia, BlueLimit=10, RedLimit=10
    • When convergence to the usual limits is reached: (z4,z5,z6, z11 <~ 250nm, z7,z8 <~ 400nm and z22 <~50nm) and the converged pupil image is reading out, send Z11 = +/- 1000nm. Note the before/after image numbers and allow a few more iterations, until it appears reasonably well-converged.
  • Blue filter focus offsets need to be remeasured after this change to BlueZ22Zero.
  • Redetermine the matrix elements M13 (Z4/Z22; currently 8.0) and M23 (Z11/Z22, currently 3.0):
    • Follow above steps to check Z4/Z11 relation, but when the converged pupil image is reading out, send Z22 = +/- 200nm.
  • Astigmatism has appeared to be oscillating in recent logs. Change AstigScale by about 60% (from 220 to 130) and test this change.

Ran Skyflat Scaling OBs

Problem with SX: actuator force violated.
  • 23000 and xxxxx are with collimation model
  • 23142 and 23144 are with +1500 nm Z11 to see if SX forces are being applied despite error messages about actuators.
  • Comparing 23000 and 23142 - Z11 did have an effect, so actuator forces are being applied.
Pointing - We were going to slew to a pointing star (ACT 284 but I mistyped 248). Andrew sent Z11 = -1500nm and SX panicked.
  • Rebooted VXWorks and brought mirror back up. The scrolling "actuator force violated" messages stopped after this -

Pointing/Co-Pointing check
  • ACT284
  • Run dofpia here. Now we have BlueZ22Zero=1.8, Blue M12 element = -1.75 and Z4/Z11 in sendsph3 = -1.75
  • 030809/030805 B/R images. Didn't notice R image coming up.
  • 031157/031154. lbcrangebal

FPIA tests at ra=05:01 dec=+27:
  • Seeing is above BadSeeingLimit.
  • 20:24 send Z11 = +1000nm. 032527/032528 were taken immediately after. Converged again in <= 5 iterations (depending on criteria - seeing is 1.5-2").
  • 033225 was converged (or one after convergence) and sent +1000nm Z11. Seeing is varying a lot from 1.1 to 1.5 or 2. Letting dofpia run.
  • Stop with "S"
  • dofpia,/X2,BlueLimit=10,RedLimit=10 to see if we get more consistent results with longer exposure times. 0359...are the first B/R images with 32sec OBs.
  • after 42711 and 42713 sent Z11 = +1000nm.
  • field was down to 46 deg, seeing was actually stabilizing... need to move to higher elevation field

FPIA tests at M67: ra=08:50:24 dec=+11:49:00
  • Seeing was initially 0.95 but is drifting up to about 1.4-1.5"

Going to lbcrangebal at nearby pointing star,
  • Slew to WT10_254.
  • dofpia, X2 /newdata/lbcb.20110309.045916.fits is a poor fit
    • notice that Blue appears to converge to a non-aberrated pupil and backs out very little at the end while Red converges to a spherically aberrated pupil and backs out ~-500 Z11 and +800 Z4 at the end.

  • Notice after this change that the Z4 on Blu e is consistently positive on first iteration, ~400 nm. We change FocusAlphaBlue from 78 to 79.
  • New dofpia run starts with 061136/061133.

Work on BlueZ22Zero, which was 1.6 (before December 2010), changed to 2.3 in December, and earlier tonight was 1.8. Just now we put it back to 1.6.
  • Both Red /Blue converge well.

Looks like we got sphOffset wrong. Extra-focal pupil has large +ve Spherical (Z11) and Intra-focal has little hole.
  • Run dofpia to converge and Andrew sends a Z11 = -250nm again. Run RB_rVexin4.ob now to take extra/intra focal pupil images:

Slewing to M3: ra=13:42, dec=29:00 because M53 field has weak pupils, lower s/n and not so good for this work.
  • Run dofpia. In 090715 is example of poorly fit pupil.
  • Changed SphOffset from +588 to +338 (subtracted -250 --- -500 was indicated, but temperature difference on mirror and we give a conservative estimate.)
  • First dofpia with new SphOffset=338 starts at 092529/092524

Science image after changing V-BESSEL (B) focus to -0.02 and r-SLOAN (R) focus to 0.031 (note that r-SLOAN focus did not need to be changed very much --- only from 0.035 ---- while V-BESSEL focus did: from 0.07 to -0.02.
  • 110602/110557 Blue has 0.78" FWHM and Red has 0.66" FWHM in 30sec images.

Now we change SphOffset to 838, FocusAlphaBlue = 79.5 and FocusAlphaRed = 78.5
  • Run dofpia: 110901/...

Now alphas changed by +0.3: FocusAlphaBlue = 79.8 and FocusAlphaRed = 78.8

dofpia

Now alphas changed again, by 0.2: FocusAlphaBlue = 80 and FocusAlphaRed = 79

dofpia

Change alphaBlue to 80.3 (lbcfpia.cfg_20110309_d.cfg)
  • dofpia: there is now a lot of oscillation. Changing alpha, and thus z4, requires a change in matrix value...

Going back to the configuration (as attached here) with FocusAlphaRed=77.5 and FocusAlphaBlue=78.5 and SphOffset=338
  • Converged quite quickly, from far off.

Z22 scaling:

  • Run dofpia again (with "a" configuration)
  • 12933/123935 are converged, dofpia exited, then we took an extrafocal pupil 124136/124134 (RB_rVfastextra)
  • Send Z22 = +200 on both Blue and Red. RB_rVfastextra 124409/124407
  • Run dofpia again. Take RB_rVfastextra: 125236/125237
  • Send Z22 = -200 on both Blue and Red. RB_rVfastextra: 125419/125416.

Summary and Tasklist
  • lbcfpia.cfg "a" configuration is good (but relatively small central hole).
  • Work on a configuration which -> a bigger central hole and will converge quickly.
  • Remeasure more filter focus offsets with "a" configuration.
  • Need to change all filters in leftchannelfocus.dat and rightchannelfocus.dat... right really did not need any scaling but left did, by about -0.09mm.
