PartnerObserving Log for 2007 Oct 15-16

Observers: D. Sand and M. Coleman
Telescope Operator: D. Gonzalez Huerta

Beautiful Clear evening. Not a cloud in the sky.

0034 -- Getting LBC set up and will take biases. John Hill has suggested an experiment to help deal with the busted actuator which we will try during twilight.

0044 -- Taking 25 biases.

0112 -- One of the TO's machines did not respond and is being rebooted, as of 5min ago.

0136 -- had to restart LBC control gui, among other things.

Moved to SA110_4p_Vgr and running V

On the phone with John Hill, having trouble keeping up with the log. Apologies.. Basically, we are inputing new aberration corrections that Hill came up with to better compensate for the dead actuator at the beginning of the night. It seems better at first..

[Note added later by JMH: We applied a set of C00 correction forces to the mirror that try to compensate for the missing actuator #140 force locally in the neighboring actuators rather than compensating with forces spread over the whole mirror. This should, and apparently does reduce the residual astigmatism which is created by the missing actuator.]

0147 -- in consultation with Olga and John Hill over the phone, we are sorting out beginning of the night focus issues

+2000 z4 -- images are too large

0153 -- a couple of iterations. getting believable pupil fits. 0158 -- Hill thinks we have bad seeing and suggests we take standard stars. we are not converging in our attempts to focus.

Running SA110_4p_Vgr -- Slightly triangular images, good enough to get zpt.

Hill thinks more standards are good. 0210 -- runn SA110_4p_UsUB

0223 -- moving to Schwope's rbs1774_b_06

0225 -- running Vfastextra with JHill keeping an eye on things.

0229 -- running Vfastextra

0233 -- getting more Vfastextras

0236 -- Beginning rbs1774_b_06. guider images looked bad, so we're stopping after the first exposure and re runing Vfastextra

0243 -- rerunning Vfastextra.

0252 -- Hill seems happy with above and suggests restarting rbs1774_b_06 (from the beginning).

Guider images are 1.0-1.2"

About 0.8"! Geez!!!

0323 -- Finished rbs1774_b_06. Starting rbs1774_b_07 immediately.

0356 -- Image quality not as good. Doing Vfastextra before running rbs1774_b_08

results from lbcfpia look good, but there still seems to be some trefoil in the images. i don't trust myself to adjust this by eye, though, and we are getting good data. so, press on!

0359 -- beginning rbs1774_b_08 -- first image has 0.74" seeing.

0429 -- Finished rbs1774_b_08. Running Vfastextra to keep images tight.

0434 -- Running rbs1774_b_09.

0505 -- Finished rbs1774_b_09. TO wants to run some kind of mirror cell script, which takes a few minutes. Then we are off to the Clementini H1 fields.

0526 -- Moving to Clementini M31_H1B_24. Some problems moving. TO is trying again.

0534 -- Servos in 'slow' mode. we are moving very slowly. it will take us hours to get there at this rate. John Little is enroute.

[Note added later by JMH: Telescope operator was resetting encoders (not sure why). It apparently failed. Telescope pointing may be incorrect for the remainder of the night. I started investigating this period because it appears that the Y collimation value increased by 0.4 mm during this period. See Issue #879.]

0544 -- Things seem fixed. Moving to M31_S2B_19.

Unfortunately, lbcfpia produced a series of IDL errors when run on this Vfastextra image. Will try another, but if it does not work, I'll begin the OB. Image pupils look fine.

Worked the second time.

Guider seeing is getting worse...reports 1.5-1.7 arcsec. Indeed, first image seems to have ~1.3 arcsec seeing (guider reporting is always pessimistic). Second image is basically the same.

0925 -- Moving to M31_H1B_32.

0935 -- M31_H1B_32 begins

Lost guiding. Image is streaky. TO is out of room....

0958 -- Something is wrong with a computer on the 5th floor.

TO has gone up to reboot it.

1127 -- Night called. The problem was not fixable. Hopefully can be fixed during the day. JET crash.

Good night.
