Technical observing with a bit of SDT M81 science at the beginning of the night.

Opened at sunset. T=10degC. Wind S at 1.5 m/sec D=-7degC. Very clear, although smoky below the boundary layer at ~12000 feet.

5 bias

SkyFlats V and rot180 V

Focussing near sky flats -- Adjusted the Z temperature coefficient up from 0.06 to 0.1 since we were out of focus.

Note that fastextra frames are arriving in /Repository within 2-3 sec of the end of readout (faster than we have ever seen). I'm still running the 2 user quickfile trick, but something else has improved.

Vfastextra Focussing near M81

M81V (still waiting for twilight to end) - Images about 1.1 arcsec in V at 1.5 airmasses.

04:10 M81V (the official dark data) - Images improved to 1 arcsec at 1.5 airmasses

5 bias while still at position of M81: Note funny horizontal striping in these bias frames. Abnormal?

21:51:52 MST SX mirror failed to focus because chase state not idle. (This happened half a dozen times during the night. It was not caused by the observer.)

  • raytrace platescale versus temperature
  • May versus November empirical platescale
  • flipped filter after cleaning gives change in scale or "alpha"
