NOMIC detector recovery

This page contains a recipe for recovering NOMIC detectorissues. Unless you are certain of what the problem is and that a specific procedure will fix it, follow this list top-to-bottom to try more graceful solutions first.

(a) Reload web page (may also try a hard reloar with [command]+[R]. Once this has finished, try a 'go' with sensible integration parameters to test. May require re-etering integration parameters.

(b) Try changing gain or subframe. Once this has finished, try a 'go' with sensible integration parameters to test. May require re-etering integration parameters.

(c) On the NOMIC camera web page, click 'Commands' in the upper-right of the control panel, then click 'Reinitialize'. This hasn't been working recently, but used to be the most graceful way to recoverminor errors. Once this has finished, try a 'go' with sensible integration parameters to test. May require re-etering integration parameters.

(d) On the NOMIC camera web page, click 'Commands' in the upper-right of the control panel, then click 'Restart server'. Once this has finished, try a 'go' with sensible integration parameters to test. Will require re-etering integration parameters.

(e) If NONE of the above helps, try the nuclear option of a full reboot:
  1. Command "shutdown -P now" on lbti-nomic to gracefully shut down if possible, wait until pings stop.

  2. Use the two PDUs at http://192.168.52.47 and http://192.168.52.48 (ask Steve for user name and password). The computers have redundant power supplies, so you must power off both lbti-nomic outlets (one on each PDU). Each outlet control on a PDU is controlled as follows:

    • Go to Device Manager -> Control.
    • Select lbti-nomic.
    • Under Control action select Off Immediate.
    • Click Next.
    • Click Apply.
    • Power off nomic-magma (just one outlet).
  3. Using LBTI's regular PDU page, turn off NOMIC Power and Electronics.

  4. Using LBTI's regular PDU page, turn off NOMIC Preamp.

  5. Wait a good 30 seconds.

  6. Power on NOMIC preamp.

  7. Power on NOMIC Power and Electronics.

  8. Wait 15 seconds.

  9. Power on the nomic-magma -- this MUST be done before powering on computer.

  10. Wait 15 seconds.

  11. Power on both lbti-nomic computer outlets.

  12. When the green light starts flashing on the Scicam web page, click Commands -> Restart server. Note: The original instructions said to 'Initialize', NOT to 'Restart server', but since Initialize is currently not working, Restart server needs to be used. This has been shown to work.

  13. Wait to see H/W Initialization Done.

  14. Take one image with Go.

  15. NOTES: Even with all this, Cornell often takes are few Initializes to get running smoothly. Try until you get a clean full frame image. Be patient, this may take many iterations. This has been seen to work better when changing the order of turning on/off NOMIC preamp and NOMIC Power and Electronics, but no clear pattern has been seen. Pray to your ancestors and sacrifize a goat as needed!
