Hydrostatic Bearing System Description

The Hydrostatic Bearing System floats the telescope on thin layers of oil, which provide smooth, low friction surfaces for the telescope to turn on. The oil is pumped out of a tank on level 4, through pads on the azimuth and elevation bearings, and then returns by gravity back to the tank. There are four pads working in the vertical directions on the azimuth bearing. The telescope is located radially in azimuth by a roller bearing. The elevation is located by four pads working vertically, and eight pads working laterally.
