LBTO Star Catalogs

File Location

The star catalogs used by both IDL and IRAF live in /lbt/catalogs. In this directory there are many subdirectories that group the star catalogs by source or purpose. The current catalogs catagories are:
  • AO
  • Astar
  • Bright
  • Clusters
  • Landlot
  • M5
  • Persson
  • Pisces
  • Pointing
  • SDT
  • Stone
  • Wref
In each of these directories there are the directories
  • catalogs
  • images/jpg
The catalog text files are named as "target".catalog, such as BS9101.catalog. The finder charts are named "target".jpg, such as BS9101.jpg

Catalog Format

The catalog format we are using for commissioning, using IDL and IRAF routines, is

Note, none of the commented (#) lines are used to build and send a preset. I have routines that create a finder chart from a .catalog file that reads some of the Keywords in the header.

Display Catalog and Finder Chart

Doug's IDL routines have a command that will display a the catalog file in an editor and the finder chart in a jpg viewer. The steps to make theses displays are:
  • % idl
  • IDL> catalog_show, BS9101

The finder chart will look like:

  • Example Finder Chart:
    BS9101.jpg

To account for different operating systems and window managers, the display tools are selected with an environment variable. For obs2 running CentOS+GNOME, say setenv FINDER_CHART_DISPLAY "eog" before you start IDL.

Display LBTO Catalogs in Xephem

It is possible to display all or selected stars in the planetarium program Xephem. This program is started with the command Xephem NOTE the capitol X. The LBTO modified version of Xephem executable has the the capitol X, and the standard generic version is lower case x.
  • obs2% Xephem

The startup screens are:
  • Xephem Startup Screens:
    xephem_startup.png

Categories of stars can be displayed by clicking one of the buttons along the top of the Sky View GUI.
  • Xephem Star Categories Buttions:
    xephem_star_catagories.jpg

To choose subgroups of categories you can use the Filter GUI. To display the Filter GUI you need to click on the Control -> Filter menu a the top of the Sky View display
  • Xephem Start Filter GUI:
    xephem_chooser.jpg

As an example, only AO stars in the range 6.0-6.9 can be displayed by clicking the checkbox on next to the "6 mag" label and uncheck the boxes next to the other magnitudes.
  • Xephem Filter GUI:
    xephem_filter.jpg

To advance the display time to so see available stars several steps are required:

  • Timing starts with looping on according to the clock updated on intervals of 30 seconds.:
    xephem_looping.jpg

  • To change the increment you must turn off the realtime (RT) update by clicking on the Stop button. The button will display Update. You should also choose an increment, such at 01:00:00 which will give 1 hour steps:
    xephem_change_increment.jpg

  • Step the display by 1 hour by clicking +1 or -1 (circled):
    xephem_step_time.jpg
