Start of Night/Closed Dome

  • UT 23:54 (-1 day) - init all LUCI-2
  • L2 0001-0002 - 2.51 sec dark
  • checking FS alignment
    • L2 0003-0004 - looks OK no adjustment needed
  • UT 00:22 - enclosure opening
  • UT 00:41 - pointing check near Pol calibration star
  • UT 00:44 - collimation check - too bright
  • UT 00:46 - moving to fainter star for collimation check

AGW Active Optics Adjustment

  • Active optics being adjusted first on AGW4 trying to get Z9/Z10 to converge.
  • Z9/Z10 Active Optics gains to zero for AGW3
  • UT 00:30 - DX WFS_rotAngleOff changed from 124.0 to 157.0 in PEPSIPOL_R.cfg (see notes in IT 7545)
  • UT 00:54 - changing sign on AGW4, WFS_rotAngleOff changed from 157 to 90 deg - clearing active optics on M1.
  • UT 00:56 - AGW4 zernikes not running away, but still struggling to collimate, AGW3 is slowly collimating (seeing ~1.5?, but EL~43)
  • UT 00:57 - Active Optics gains to 1.0 for Z9/Z10 on AGW3
  • UT 01:04 - Z9 stable on AGW3, but Z10 runs away - suggested rotation and a sign problem (Z9/Z10 disagree on the preferred rotation)
  • UT 01:05 - WFS_rotAngleOffs changed from 91 to 156 for SX, but now Z9 runs away (confirming the Z9/10 disagreement)
  • UT 01:06 - moving to higher elevation to get better seeing
  • UT 01:07 - changed scale_Z10 from -1.70 to +1.70 for AGW3 in PEPSIPOL_L_RM_sub11.cfg
  • UT 01:08 - DX missed star on new preset - OSA nudged star over
  • UT 01:18 - apparent runaway which is not Z9, Z10 - apparently astigmatism
  • UT 01:20 - WFS_rotAngleOffs on both sides to 105 deg - this makes the astigmatism more stable, but Z9/Z10 start running away
  • UT 01:23 - clouds closing in around horizon
  • UT 01:25 - AGW4 is looking better in terms of dome seeing - WFS_rotAngleOffs back to 124 deg on both sides; Z9/Z10 Active Optics gains to zero (where we started)
  • UT 01:26 - clearing active optics both sides
  • UT 01:28 - turning over to I.Ilyin for calibration star
  • Z9 was being added despite Active Optics gains being set to 0, the Z9 value is be coming from the lookup table (for AdSec correction)

John's Active Optics notes continue here - working in parallel with ADC work by Ilya. Since astigmatism doesn't like angle 90, but trefoil does, we could look for another solution near angle 90+60=150 by changing the signs of Z9 and Z10. The following table shows the angular ranges and redundancies for the various Zernikes. We aren't using quadrafoil yet, so the present rangle of stability is +-15 degrees.

  • UT 01:36 - 02:06 - Astigmatism was ocscillating at bit at angle 124. It could be off by 20 degrees?
  • UT 02:21 - WFS_rotAngleOffs changed from 124 to 130 on both sides.
  • UT 02:30 - That reduced the oscillation of astigmatism. Could we go farther? WFS_rotAngleOffs changed from 130 to 140 on both sides.
  • UT 02:40 - Seeing blows up to 3 arcsec. (wfs not reliable at this time)
  • UT 02:55 - changed signs of scale_Z9 and scale_Z10 for both sides, but didn't activate them (gains still zero). SX is -1.7,-1.7; DX is +1.7,-1.7
  • UT 03:03 - 140 was more stable than 124, but maybe 130 was better (or was bothered by bad seeing). WFS_rotAngleOffs changed from 140 to 144 on both sides.
  • UT 03:23 - WFS_rotAngleOffs changed from 144 to 148 on both sides.
  • UT 03:41 - Enable SX Z9/Z10 by making Active Optics gain 1, just before changing target.
    Added Probe Position and Primary Delta after suspicion on 20220104 that Primary Delta has wrong sign.

  • UT 04:20 - WFS_rotAngleOffs changed from 150 to 146 on both sides at EL=48.
  • UT 04:36 - 146 is better than 150 for both, but maybe not better than 148 on SX; 146 is better than 148 on DX. SX: 146 --> 147, DX: 146 --> 145
  • UT 04:55 - SX: 147 --> 146.

This seems to be a stable situation that we can do science with. Astigmatism, Coma, and Trefoil now have consistent signs, but we have not checked quarafoil. The WFS_rotAngleOffs is probably good within ~5 degrees. We probably would need to run IDL zernike_collect to further refine the angle with quadrafoil. I think we will call this adjustment exercise done for now. The thing that bothers me is that Z9/Z10 have converged to large values like 250-300 on both sides. Especially DX (without AdSec) I would expect to have smaller values after the primary stabilizes thermally. Better seeing might help refine the adjustment of the angle. All M1 actuators are enabled.

Polarimetric Calibration Star

  • Gamma Equ
  • UT 01:28 - preset to Gamma Equ (should take 30min)
  • AdSec will need to be set for 26deg limit when done
  • 0.5-1 mag variation in extinction according to guiders
  • UT 02:08 - finished star, resetting AdSec limit to 26deg

ADC Checks

  • Using Gamma Equ for ADC checks before it sets
  • UT 02:30 - stopping preset - moving to higher elevation - hit 26deg limit
  • UT 02:34 - moving to HD 32147 - 28 deg elevation and rising
  • UT 03:29 - preset to HIP 117314 - 30deg elevation and setting
  • UT 03:41 - facing into winds - winds too high for AdSec - moving away from winds to zenith
  • UT 03:43 - moving to HIP 6261
  • UT 04:07 - moving to omi02 Eri
  • Restarting PEPSI software to update config
  • UT 04:19 - re-sending preset to omi02 Eri

  • variable seeing, w/excursions to high values affecting confidence that ADC is calibrated - using stars with low polarization and known profiles to check if ADC (or other) may be causing issues
  • UT 05:58 - wind gust hit 21.3m/s - looking to close soon
  • UT 06:00 - restarting software to update config
  • UT 06:01 - closing for high winds

PETS

  • UT 06:52 - reconfiguring for PEPSI-PFU, putting blind mask into LUCI-2 FPU for D. Thompson tests
  • UT 07:08 - reconfig complete - but gusts now abover 22m/s
  • UT 07:43 - winds well over limits
  • UT 08:41 - in addition to winds, clouds are thickining up
  • UT 10:43 - clouds have cleared out but winds remain above limits
  • UT 10:57 - winds remain over limits, clouds returing
