Summary:

Confirmed rotatorZP data on stoneO mods mask and longslit method. Executed large throw dither observations on M52 and NGC40. A large circular bloc was noted in the lower right quadrant of the luci2 images. There appares to be something on or near the luci2 entrance window (IT8178). Errors appear ed to accumulate when executing large dither offsets over an extended period of time (IT8179). We obtained transform data for LUCI1 and LUCI2 onthe StoneO field in ~1.2" seeing. Executed a LUCI binoscular nonsidereal imaging observation without issue. High humidity moved in when we switched to MODS for Longslit observations. Taking flexure N30 Imaging flexure compensation data while we were in fog.

Problems:

IT 8178 Blob on LUCI2 entrance window.
IT 8179 Copointing warnings from accumulating errors when repeating offsets.

Proposed Plan:

  • LUCI-1 - CRITICAL PRIORITY
  • DONEL1 Rotator ZP for AGW - (1 hr) - critical
    • Long Slit Method - instructions to be provided by J. Power - to be compared with results from last night
  • DONEAGW Transform for both LUCIs (use the N30 fieldstop, H or FeII filters) - (2 hr) - high/critical
  • LUCI-1 Imaging check (can run LUCI-2 in parallel to repeat) - high
    • Important to test in and out of field to "stress-test" AGW-1 - does it recover from long throws? and multi-point dithers?
    • Sidereal
      • Dither in-field
        • J1601 (sets around 10pm) - dithering in the field -Kband only
        • NGC 7027 (sets 4am) - cycles through all filters, can stop early
      • Dither out-of-field
        • (K only) M52 - (all night) - KJH
        • FAILED (IT8179) NGC 40 - (all night) - all filters
    • DONENS
      • Comet 29/P - (after 10pm) - JHK - updated for UT 02 Sep 2020
  • Twilight Flats - low
    • as of 2020-Sep-1, we have LBCR flats @ r-SLOAN, R-BESSEL, i-SLOAN, Y-FAN and F972N20.
    • We need LBCR: z-SLOAN, I-BESSEL and V-BESSEL and all LBCB filters.
  • Photometric Standards - (1-2hrs) - medium - only if clear - any seeing
  • AFTER LUCI-1 checkout:
  • LBCs - LBC-Blue is primary focus, but we should run binocularly, LBCB+LBCR.
    • Collimate WRS/DOFPIA - high (4 x 0.25 hrs) - to check LBC-Blue
    • Superfocus sequence -PA=0,180 high (1 hr) - to check LBC-Blue but gather more LBC-Red data.
    • Rotator Center Checks, start with PA=0, 180 (track mode), then 90,270 - high (1hr) - to check LBC-Blue and gather more LBC-Red data.

1:00 Josh is brining up. the WFS. Bringing up LUCI and mods. Tweaking luci1 feild stop alignment. MODS seqinit run and sievesnap taken. LBC's up and running.

1:50 Josh is keeping us closed while we wait out a spike in humidity. Monitoring the trend. Taking some LBC and MODS biases and LUCI darks in the mean time.

2:16 Humidity has levelled off. Josh is going to open. Thin cirrus.

2:28 Josh is sending pointing and collimation preset. Seeing 1.0-1.2" on the wfs

3:48 Seeing is too poor for transform work ~2.8". Reverting PCSInstruemnt.conf and restring PCS. Configuration with good numbers are PCSInstrument.con.20200902_2. Moving on to M52 Imaging to test dither in/out of field. Significant trefoil that was not clearing when we got there so Josh cleared it and restarted collimation.

M52 K L1 0623-632 L2 0623-632
Seeing is already rebouding, improvived to ~1.05" on WFS. Will finish K fileter and see if this seeing trend holds, themn move to transform field.

Seomthign weird on LUCI2 images. Very bright blob started appearing ~0624 K images. Could it be the reflection from the moon? Theat side is in the moon light. Light from WFS? Not visible in J (633-634) Switching to H (635-636). There is a shadow now where the bright blob was suggesting somethign is infront of the luci2 entrance window

Barry logged in and took a look at the images. he submitted IT 8178.

4:30 Seeing has improved and appears stable ~1.2". Updated PCSInstrument.conf and restarted PCS and moving to transform field.

luci2 on stoneO just taking an image (with guide probe in the field). Blob is still present.

  • GS11 vignetting in luci patrol field.
  • GS 23 is very faint and left did not catch it, right barely did. Skipping GS23 (item5) on lfbg and restarting on item 6
  • Note NEXP set to 2 for lfbg for some reason? although not falling behind LUCI2 so not stopping to correct it. Will correct on next failure or if it falls behind too much
  • GS1 PA190 on rfbg failed first try. Looks like it tried to grab before rotator finished getting to position. Restarting transform collect at item12 in transform list
  • 5:15 Seeing is holding stable at ~1.05-1.2"
  • GS 12 PA170 on rfbg missed, restart at item 32 (second from last)
  • GS10 PA`70 on lfbg failed. Last star, not worth restarting

  • running in automatic, lets see if this works first try - Gains 4.09 0.73 0.63, then applies optical gain. Optical gain step failed, cand caused going into safe skip, seeing bubble? Unsure but resending.
  • Gains 3.13 0.66 0.63 optical gains applied Worked! 0.69, 0.14,0.15. Filter echo seperation looks ok on luci.

6:24 Reauthorized Bino LUCI again. Going to Comet 29P> Actually, this target is not up yet. Returning to imaging. Going to NGC40 to cycle through all filters. Seeing 1"
  • L1 0725-759 L2 0673-707 The circular blob remains on luci2
  • on a 300, 300 offset about 20 images in we got a copoing limit warning from the tcs. nothing failed but it was weird. We got the same copointing warning on the next sky and every sky offsset since.
    Target on both sides greater than 41" from midpoint
    second one said target greater than 43" from midpoint
    third sky offset said target greater than 44" from midpoint
    ... We are repeating the same dither pattern over and over but the error from midpoint is accumulating. Josh is submitting an IT 8179
    Seeing 0.9" - 1"
    Failed outright on on sky offset after L1 0758 L2 0706 when error accumulated to 50" from midpoint (35th exposure. Resending offset to source then going to try again with sky. This again outright failed.
  • Resending the preset. Then will resume and complete the last 2 brGamma exposure and continue with the other filters and see if the offset errors accumuilate. Broke the copointing limit immediately after preset. Elevation 50, now it is complaining that we are 55" from midpoint when sending a 300, -300 sky offset.
Resending Preset with a more watchful eye on the logs:
IIF is receiving synchronous commands. Preset did not clear this. Not sure? Disabiling copointing is one possibility. I think we have proven that there is an issue with robustness of large throws. This could have to do with the lack of transform accumulating errors? or some other software glitch? doesn't appear to be harware. Last images L1 759, L2 707. This requires additional investigation, but I think we have demonstrated there is an issue with the robustness of large throws (the purpose of this test). Revisit.

8:14 Moving on to the NS test for 90000392 Comet 29/P. Blob on LUCI2 lower right remains. Seeing 0.86" on WFS. Non sidereal rates applied without issue.

    Command 'red filter r_rdss' timed out after 60 sec. Retry worked.

  • The imaging only has g & r. Taking longer acq time on LS acq. I can add the other filters to imaging if this doesn't appear reasonable. Humidity is rising. 92% now

9:30 Humidity is at 95.1% we are closing. Object was barely visible in 2 min exposure but we closed before any science obtained.
