Summary

These are John's notes which are mostly about AGW3 and AGW4 Active Optics. This is not the observing log.

Collimation with IDL is working fine. We improved some parameters in GCS Active Optics, but it still sends the wrong sign of Z7 and runs away. X-pupil shift was corrected, and lenslet grid position was corrected.

We took a boatload of spectra during the eclipse. This went very well except for the weather. Cirrus clouds from 1-2 mag thick didn't do the data much good.

We had high winds and clouds for the rest of the night until we closed for wind at 11 UT. We used the time trying to refine the rotation zeropoints, and work out how to get the AGW4 probe centered on the fiber. We did improve the rotator zeropoints on both sides as measured by both off-axis guide stars and the PPOL cameras, but perhaps we are not yet at ultimate precise values. The AGW4 probe is clearly off the rotator axis as we have rotator-dependent pointing issues. We also struggled a bit with 15th mag guide stars that are too faint when the sky is filled with moonlit cirrus.

00:40 UT - Test preset with XHotspot=10 YHotspot=1 moves AGW probes to

If you send your DX telescope preset with additional arguments for Xhotspot =-10.5 and Yhotspot=+1.2 the star should arrive much closer to the PEPSI fiber (by adjusting the AGW4 probe). However, this irritates the copointing limit bug in PCS.

00:57 UT - ACQUIRE preset for pointing.

01:09 UT - ACTIVE preset on-axis - GCS still diverges in coma, so collimating with IDL.

01:18 UT - Ilya's ACTIVE preset (again doesn't find guide star at -46,515)

01:22 UT - Ilya's ACTIVE preset to binary star for rotation calibration, but 15 mag star is too faint for the moderate cirrus we have.

01:25 UT - TRACK preset, but didn't find star. So spiral to find star on PEPSIPOL fiber viewer.

01:49 UT - ACTIVE preset and clouds are thinner so we can collimate on 15 mag

Xpupil shift is wrong in IDL.

01:5x - offset DETXY - Josh is iterating to find the correct offset for the right side. These offsets are applied to Ilya's presets without hotspot settings to position the target star near the DX fiber.

02:00 UT - changed both x_pupil_shift_direction back to -1.0 which is correct. restart IDL. GCS is also reversed in X shift (not yet corrected).

02:19 UT - Changed WFS_pupil_shift_x from -1.0 to +1.0 in GCS (sign opposite IDL), but have not yet restarted GCS.

02:20 UT - Ilya is working on DX ADC which is clearly not working correctly.

02:22 UT - Reset DX W controller from button on GCSGUI, but it didn't help. Still can't talk to AGW4 WFS. It shows errors in agw4-cam window when we reset controller.

Up until now PEPSIPOL LEFTZEROPOINT is 135 deg same as RIGHTZEROPOINT (and we didn't change anything).

02:50 UT - restart both GCSs and agw4-cam. That revived the right wfs camera.

02:54 UT - ACQUIRE preset to pointing star near the moon.

Ilya measures 9 deg for DX and 4.5 deg on SX (upper star is farther right in both cases on fiber cam).

02:5x UT - ACQUIRE preset to adjust pointing near the moon.

03:15 UT - Highjack TRACK preset to Tycho. We hit somewhere on the moon, but hard to tell where. PEPSIPOL fiber cameras are bright but uniform illumination. Klaus says they saturated the first spectrum.

 DX DETXY is -10.5, +10 arcsec
DX Hotspot -6.3, +6.0 mm

04:41 UT - Totality has arrived. Unfortunately, the high cirrus clouds have worsened to nearly 2 mags of extinction.

The following section of TCS log seems to show that the GCS spot grid is too far to upper left by ~100 pixels. This image had the wrong X-pupil shift, but that doesn't influence the y-value. From ds9, the center of the pupil is near pixel 150,243 which is where GCS has spot 0,0. GCS did cut out the subimage correctly except for the known (now) X-shift issue.

07:59 UT - ACTIVE preset collimating on-axis GCS left side runs away from 00017, but right side claims saturated and didn't wfs. Analyze this left data later - it looks like sign of coma is wrong.

08:23 UT - ACQUIRE preset

08:29 UT - ACTIVE preset both sides on-axis SX 000037 DX 000004 then stopWFS and switch to IDL collimation. On SX both IDL and GCSL agree on the raw Zernikes, but they differ on the sign of the Rotated Zernikes for Z5 and Z7 despite agreeing on the rotation angle and the pupil position. On DX, they don't agree on the Raw Zernikes in the presence of a pretty large wavefront error.

Pupils are 1 row to low in IDL see SX 000045_dd, DX 000029_dd.

08:37 UT - off-axis preset from PEPSI with 15.4 guide star - didn't find star X=-45 Y=432.5

08:42 UT - ACQUIRE preset

08:42 UT - resend PEPSI off-axis. Saw target, but not guide star

08:48 UT - resend as ACQUIRE, found stars VERY faint compared to bkgd, plus about 10 arcsec of pointing discrepance compared to on-axis - probably a rotation issue. Josh corrected the off-axis pointing, but then Ilya loses target star.

Josh rotates +1.8 deg on SX with an offset command to bring guide star to AGW center.

09:09 UT rotation on left back to 0.0

09:12 UT rotation on left to 5.0 deg (Ilya measures 3.8 deg +-1)

09:16 UT rotation on right to 3.0 deg to center guide star

09:25 UT restart PCS with LEFTZEROPOINT=136.8 RIGHTZEROPOINT=138.0, ACQUIRE preset

09:28 UT left rotation offset 3.6 (sign was wrong on ZEROPOINT corrections)

ACQUIRE preset ---> angle is correct on left, and seems better on right, but right has uncertainty due to probe not on rotator center.

Offset DETXY is oriented 90 degrees from DXT camera

09:46 UT - Offset -12 5 is about the correct DETXY offset for right side

09:47 UT - ACTIVE to both sides again but too cloudy

09:52 UT - ACQUIRE on-axis on another star with a brighter guide star (adjust pointing here)

09:58 UT - ACTIVE preset with off-axis guide star 11.5 mag, but not reachable

10:01 UT - ACTIVE preset with off-axis guide star 9.7 mag (PA algorithm is wrong in IRAF) as sending these stars to the -X axis rather than Y axis.

10:03 UT - PA=+90 went to 9.9, -100

10:04 UT - PA=-90 worked for left, but we didnt find off-axis star on right. We think that is because probe is not centered so pointing is rotator angle dependent.

10:xx UT - PA=-90 on-axis didn't find star on right

10:17 UT - ACTIVE PA=0 on-axis. We were too much into the wind and RIP'd the shells.

10:25 UT - ACQUIRE preset out of the wind Both stars found for PA=0 Rotator=-111

10:33 UT - collimating both sides with IDL 2.0 sec exposure on 7.2 mag star

10:35 UT - TRACK preset

Offset DETXY -12 +1 on right to get star

N-S motion moves star nicely along a column on DX fiber cameras.

N-S motion shows 2 deg angle on lower camera - maybe within the uncertainty

ACTIVE preset into wind rips shells

10:54 UT - ACTIVE preset to North but didn't find star

10:57 UT - ACQUIRE preset for pointing

11:03 UT - Close for increasing wind.
