Summary

Given the fairly poor weather conditions and the forecast and the high priority of the flexure calibration task compared to the low priority of the other tasks left for LBC and MODS, we decided to proceed with our closed dome flexure calibration and spectral wavelength calibration of LUCI1.

LOG

03:00 Waited a bit to see if weather would improve. We had some clearing and a drop in humidity, but the dewpoint was still in the red. We decided to wait a little to see if there was improvement. In the meantime we set up for the:
  • LUCI authorized at RFBG
  • Telescope el=72.5 degree
  • EL and RFBG Rotator enabled
  • Set rotator to -90 degrees
  • AGw1 stages homed
  • High-bay flood lights OFF (OK if other lights remain on)
  • Calibration unit in beam
  • Spectroscopic Sieve mask in the FPU
  • Lamp(s) need to be turned on/off manually
  • Scripts located in ~engineer/00_Scripts/Recalibrate/Flexure/

Started with 2 X [20s X 1 X 1] = 0130 and 0131 with lamp off

04:00 Started the first flexure run:

  • turned on the calibration lamp
  • turned on flexure compensation

04:15 As I was monitoring the data, I noticed the flexure compensation lamp was off after a few frames. I was very sure I turned it on, so it was unclear to me what happened (an errant mouse click? No idea!) I stopped the script and we went back to -90 however, when I tried to restart the script the rotator was not responding, I tried a few times, checked the telescope service, etc. Ultimately Geno had to do a rotator restart (see nightlog). I then restarted the scripts successfully:

  • turned on flexure compensation

Started the script with flexure compensation DEFINITELY on. Again, about 6 exposure through it was off and stayed off. When moving back Geno felt that the rotator was moving too slowly or having problems. Made several calls to troubleshoot. See nightlog for more detail.

Weather remains very iffy. Humidity is lower, but changes on a +10/-10 delta over 20 minute time periods and nasty and unpredictable clouds and possible weather associated with a nearby cyclonic system lurk off the horizon. Again, open shutter tasks are low priority and given the time necessary to complete them and the time likely remaining until either clouds or humidity sock us again, we're staying closed and finishing the high priority spectral verification
