UT 201201013 LBBG Technical Observations

Summary

Took quite some performance verification data (collimation & dice5) for about 5hrs at good observing conditions
SExtractor tests by Doug during periods of poor seeing
Lost 4hrs at begin of night due to clouds and the last half hour tdue to a power outage
Good night with LBC, no real problems beyond the usual FPIA things.

Details

00:30 Weather at sunset: Almost overcast, probably not much to do for the first part of the night, chance is god that its getting better later on. Temp (ambient) = -2deg, Temp (mirror) = -1.4deg, Hum 10%, Wind ~ 10m/s. Geno open vent dors.

04:23 Somewhat less clouds. Geno opens up and we try to acquire and collimate just to be ready in case it gets even better (still, no useful observations are possile right now). Preset to BS9107 in active mode and collimate. Doesn't look bad, guider reports 0.8" and even better.

LBC Thermal focus @ 1:00 am local time, 08:00 UT

  • having converged we now run the models with the new temperature terms and thermally cycle the mirrors.
  • added 0.255 to blue global Z offset and 0.766 to red global Z offset.
  • Driving the mirrors up in temperature from initial starting position with glass therms 2 degrees too cold. 09:23 exiting FPIA gracefully, changing temp 2 coefficients and temp 1 coefficient in blue and red, and reconverging with FPIA before starting again
09:35 making other adjustments to global offsets.
10:17 running dofpia in the non-converging mode to see if we've improved things.
10:22 running again in new field, hopefully more pupils...
11:10 stopped, adjusted coefficients, reconverging to set globals...
11:20 trying new field.
11:38 problems with blue not fitting pupils, bad seeing + moon+ not good field not helping.
12:26 made hopefully final tweak of t2 terms; blue to -0.29 and red to -0.33. Running FPIA to check it out.
