Left Direct Gregorian Technical Observing with IRTC: UT 2009 October 26

Summary

Sky was mostly clear so we were open all night. However, the high altitude seeing was poor. So data on AGw transformations is not as good as could be hoped. The best seeing we saw was 1 arcsec, and it was between 1.7 and 2.2 arcsec for the second half of the night.

Found two places in the astrometric catalog files where the proper motion of the central star was wrong. This explains some (but perhaps not all) of the problems of this night and last.

Lost 0.5 hour to AGW4 not moving the probe.

Lost 1 hour to telescope problems related to MCSPU in two separate incidents.

We got about 28 stars in a set of pointing model data. Doug turned these into a new pointing model and we were able to test it with another 38 stars at the end of the night. This is the only really productive activity in 2 arcsec seeing.

Lost 0.5 hour to OSS not moving the secondary. But it looks like that was going on for several hours, so more data may have been lost.

Had relatively minor issues with GCS and GCSGUI.

02:16 Clear C00 as we are getting bad influence forces from PSF. Actuator 101 was at -125 # correction. This makes enough defocus plus bad seeing, that the guider can't really see the star image any more. The last 20 minutes of WFS images were numbers 49 - 88 to be checked later by Doug.

My impression is that the divergence of the correction forces is only happening when the seeing is 2 arcsec or worse.

What is the little image below the WFS spots on the WFScam image? Could it been the moon or something else in a direct image of the sky?

Seeing is 1.2 to 1.5 arcsec on the guider in the following data.

We didn't catch it, but the probe had not been moving correctly since 03:22:24. This makes lots of "interesting" structure in Doug's plot. See Issue #2411.

4:51 Terminal running ds9 and CGSGui froze on downtown workstation. The terminal started on lbtdu16 was ssh connected to lbtssh then lbtmu43. A GCSGui was start from that terminal around 1:20 and ds9 started around 4:38. All three froze around 4:50. When I do a "ps" on lbtmu43 I see:

I was interacting with ds9, so I don't think it is an ssh "disconnect due inactivity" problem. Doug

04:59 Executed B23-Test 16. all-on-source flag seems to work fine.

05:00 transtar (9) from above failed to find the star. This is because the right side authorization from the B23-Test 16 reset the left side pointing model. This was not the behaviour I was expecting from a left-centric monocular PCS.

Tom says it stopped tracking because it didn't like the polynomials. They were stale by 1.06 sec. Then the restart problem seemed to have something to do with the optical support state machine. Tom will investigate that more on Monday.

IDL Field Data Collection Tests

08:30 execute an IDL> agw_wfsc_multiple, 1. The irc_client.conf file was not available in /tmp. Need to fix my IDL routine to put it there automatically

8:40 add a stepfocus to agw_wfsc_multiple to force application of collimation LUT. First time fail because "DEFAULT" in not an option for ope in the call. Change it to 'M1M2".

8:50 execute agw_collimate. Successful, other than M2 appears to still be in motion.

9:00 Collimation with IDL was successful, but M2 PSF gui show yellow for x,y,z, etc. However, PSFL did not report a failed collimation (with M2) in its events. Why? John and Wayne working on it.

09:15 Moved Hexapod so star was out of guide box. However, Sextractor found star along left edge where the first column was brighter than the rest of the image. See /Repository/GCSfiles/20091026/guiderimage004350.fits through 4371 (or so...)

09:16 The recovery was that we had to restart OSS twice. Then we cleared active optics in PSFL and started afresh.

Based on the IRTC headers, it looks like M2 was stuck in this position, and thus not collimating correctly since 05:52 UT. (around the time we were on the phone with Tom)

Decided to take some data in this 1.8 to 2 arcsec seeing, just to exercise the system. I don't expect this data is worth reducing.

Taking these in TRACK mode, so guider is not centering the stars on IRTC. All these images were taken with the initial values of IE/CA in the model. No manual intervention was required, although we did miss a couple stars.
