Summary

A decent night despite the clouds:

Started late (20:30) because of clouds, 1H lost to weather.
IT#2185 Spontaneous logout from linux on lbtmu05? Very odd. Lost 20 minutes.

Data collected for:
  • Small offsets (dice5 0.25x0.5 arcsec, some in bad seeing)
  • 1200s guiding stats in poor & decent seeing.
  • Large offsets test in the Stone M field
  • Long guiding sequence (40min) at low EL
  • Verified updatePointingReference in RADEC space needs work

Preparations:

18:22:03.672 Preset closed dome (before sunset) ACQUIRE mode to test readiness...success.

Details

18:55 Cirrus over 90% of the sky, about half of which is thick. Tair=10.5, Tprimary=8.9 RH=46.4% Wind ~5m/s.

20:30 Opening dome. Aaron reports it is fairly clear at the moment. Tair=9.9, Tprimary=9.1, RH=50.4 Wind ~5m/s.

20:34:33.532 pointto M5_1246 to do initial pointing correction on IRTC. Star on IRTC. IE changed from -74 to -65, CA from 6.6 to 0.
20:39:30.438 pointto BS9149 ACQUIRE mode...looks OK.
20:41:50.271 pointto BS9149 ACTIVE to collimate. WFS 2969, 2488, 858, 336. Guider seeing 0.75 arcsec FWHM. All of the off-axis guide stars here are ~15th mag or fainter.

Small offsets test

Note: 044210 0111_cube - Two actuators were re-enabled during this exposure. There was a jump in position and it went out of collimation, but was back to sub-400nm by the start of the next exposure.
Seeing started out OK (0.6) at start but was up to 1-1.5 in loop4, 0.8 in loop 7.

22:03:54.943 Offset command mount timed out in 300 seconds. We hit a wrap limit on the rotator. When I clicked the stop guiding button on GCSGUI it remained stuck in the activated state, so we restarted GCS (at 10:08:18). Script aborted in loop 9. Does the wrap logic also unwrap if needed on offsets?

22:08:41.605 pointto BS9149 gs=4. The guider was having a problem but Aaron issued a "slew_to_track" and the preset completed successfully.

22:13 dice5 0.25x0.50 30x2sec loopN=10
Seeing is variable from ~1.0 up to 3 arcsec FWHM. I doubt that this dataset will be useful. Last cube was 0173.

Weather station is reading 6m/s but when Tim and I were up on level 9/10 looking into places to mount the half-sky cameras it did not seem this strong. Does the weather station anemometer need recalibration?

1200s guiding tests With the seeing so poor, the guide star is fairly often jumping out of the 1.08 arcsec diameter target circle. This may show stronger correlations between IRTC and guider images.
23:31:26.724 pointto BS9164 gs=14 @ default PA (346.35) G* is 12.86 mag (not found).
23:36:53.917 pointto ACT0247 gs=0 Tel="ACQUIRE" PAM- PA=0 to check pointing. IE now -51, CA now -15.5
23:39:14.276 pointto BS9164 gs=14. Seeing a bit better here, ~1.5 arcsec.
11:42 dice5 4.0 4.0 600x2sec loopN=1 (UT 06:42)

IT#2185 Something logged me out of lbtmu05, some time in the last ~30 minutes! Only 2 cubes collected: 0174 and 0175, so 1 20-minute datacube lost. What happened? On lbtmu05 the boot.log and messages files are empty, and the previous versions do not show anything odd. The last message in boot.log.1 is an snmpd startup but there is no indication of a reboot since May 14. First message in /var/log/secure is at 10:30.

Start: 074139 0176_cube, End: only one set collected.
Seeing has improved. Guider is holding steady around 0.5 arcsec FWHM. There are clouds low on the horizons, but it seems quite clear overhead. Since the seeing is much improved, we are stopping this dice5 20-minute integrations after the first datacube in order to take a set of small-offset data.

Start: 092226 0227_cube End: Note: two of the five stars in this pattern are saturated on the 2s IRTC exposures (first and third positions). Towards the end of the sequence the on-axis source was coming in and out from clouds.

The behavior was the same in both cases. Something in the update pointing reference caused the guide star to be lost.

03:49:23.995 0280_cube 240 x 0.25s (offset in DETXY, zerobase, guiding continued through the test).

03:53:00.605 pointto BS9153 gs=8 (11.8mag). EL~16, preset failed to find star. Too low for this test...moving to:

03:56:02.851 pointto BS9158 gs=15 (10.08mag). EL~36 at start. Files 105954 0281_cube (1500 x 2.0s = 50 minutes). A few of the WFS images during this sequence looks distinctly elongated (later in the sequence, around 4:30-4:45). Lost guiding around frame 1450. Ended sequence at ~27 degrees.
