Telescope and AGw Commissioning at LFBG with IRTC - 26-27 April 2009

Summary

  • Good night overall. Seeing ~0.5 on guider in r'.
  • One power glitch, two GCS restarts (timeouts waiting for wfs, guider images).
  • Some vibration data gathered pointed into ~10m/s wind. Elongation visible in some guider images.
  • Acquired, guided, and WFS'ed on r=16.5 mag star (well detected)
  • Stone L field, 48 observations split over 2 PA's
  • Rotation center on IRTC on both Stone L and M
  • Stone M field, 37 observations at one PA.

19:00 MST We have been ventilating through the side doors for the last couple of hours. M1 is still warmer than outside. Sunset is 19:05.

19:10 Tdome=2.54 T(M1)=4.7 Tout=0.8 RH=26%, wind=10m/s.

19:10 pointto M5_0347 Tel="TRACK" PA=0 PAM-. Pointing updated to IE=-123, CA=-44

19:24 pointto BS9138 for initial collimation. WFS rms: 1801, 1652, 1824, 1471, 955, 768, 654, 321, Lots of scattered twilight on the WFS.

Vibration Test (medium wind conditions)

19:48 The astrometric fields are not up for a ferw hours and the wind is coming from the south (where we are pointing), so we will gather some IRTC datacubes for vibration analysis

19:56 pointto M5_1246 gs=5 The on-axis source is occasionally saturating a few pixels. Collecting data at 1 ms per image at 100 Hz. Seeing on the guider is about 0.7 arcsec FWHM.

Single image timestamp, cubename, seq rate (as reported on IRTC GUI). Note that at least some of the guider images appear elongated, so I expect we are seeing some vibrations. Dithered so we can self-subtract the background.

And a couple of longer sequences in case the others are too short. From ~0027_cube on I tried to time the start of the sequence to coincide with completion of a collimation update.

Observations taken towards SW and the wind is coming from about that direction

20:59 pointto M5_0531 gs=5 in the NE to repeat the vibration images opposite the wind. First, update pointing to IE=-139 CA=-52. The back is to the wind, vent doors are now closed. Wind is spiking to ~13m/s, mean around 10. The WFS is clearly struggling as compared to the prior position facing into the wind. Guide star FWHM is around 0.75-1.0 arcsec.

Note: it took 48 seconds (plus or minus 1) for the IRTC to write a 313MB datacube to /Repository - 6.5 MB/s. This was timed from watching the start and end times of writing the data to /Repository with "ls -lh".

Open-loop Tracking Test (partial)

21:45 pointto BS9149 gs=7 for open-loop tracking tests if conditions permit. Correct pointing: IE=-120 CA=-42 .

22:05 takeseq 2.0 1000 (about 45 minutes. Will start/stop guiding and WFSing as needed on PCS/PSF at the times below:

22:07:53 MST start takeseq, guiding and WFSing are on, for baseline comparison. Telescope jumped into "none" mode and subsequent preset failed because the AZ axis was not ready:

Aaron reports ECS messages that the winter chiller failed, apparently due to a (rapid?) series of 4 "bumps" in the commercial power. There was also a large collimation jump (2700nm focus, 3600 nm total) at some point before the first preset after recovery that completed at 22:25:19.059. The WFS was able to pull it back. Lost 21 minutes (22:07:53 - 22:29:14) to this failure.

Note: should report guider and WFS image numbers on the GUI.

22:31:15 start block with guiding and WFSing on.
22:40:21 start block with guiding and WFSing off. Slow drift on guider, but collimation stayed decent (went over 400nm after ~8-9 minutres).
22:50:14 started guiding to recenter, then back off 30s later (22:50:43). WFSing was kept off. Z4 and Z8 dominate the rms.
22:59:40 guiding restarted to recenter. This time we left the guiding on to get a few good measurements of the wavefront errors.
23:04:27 end of sequence. Guider showing 0.9 arcsec FWHM, WFS shows 1076 nm rms on last update. Restarted WFSing.

Wavefront Stability Test

23:10:30 Starting from well-collimated, leave guiding on and turn off application of WFSing at PSF.
23:34:41 WFSing turned back on to recollimate. We were up to 1850nm rms after ~25 minutes.
23:37:12 WFSing back off for remainder of sequence (last ~200 images). WF rms at end was 492nm

23:47 Correcting pointing on ACT0211 near the Stone L field. IE now -148, CA now -52 .
