Telescope and AGw Commissioning at LFBG with IRTC - 05-06 April 2009 MST

Summary

Winds are down, clouds are thin, seeing is moderate and telescope is in a happy mood. So we got a fair set of data for a new measurement of the AGw probe transformation. Jesper is analyzing it now. The initial result is that this data set has much larger residuals than the March 16 data. This may be due to the poor seeing tonight. We certainly had lots of image motion on the scale of a 2 second exposure.

Jesper writes later in the morning:
  I have placed a new transform on the agw-control computer. The name
is /etc/oacontrol/oacontrol.conf.basic20090406. You can substitute the
existing oacontrol.conf file with the new one at your leisure.
  It is based on 45 data points excluding only star #19 which is a double.
  The transform is a simple orthogonal transform without the pinhole offset as
the data are too noisy for determining this possible offset. The RMS of the
transform is 260 microns in X and Y, which is about 0.15arcsec. So we are more
than a factor 3 off where we would like to be. The transform should bring the
star well on the rotation axis, the zero point is (-0.14,612.50) in excellent
agreement with the alignment from  yesterday. The rotation angle is
178.7degree, which differs from the previous angle of 180.3 deg.

We continue to have problems with elevation pointing after resetting encoders, and tonight we can't blame it on temperature gradients. Azimuth matches the IRTC pointing model from months ago, while elevation has a 3 arcminute offset.

We got Dave's LBTtools.IRTC.center3 script working to take an IRTC image and then offset the specified star onto the rotator center. It now works at all position angles.

18:20 Reset Encoders

18:35 Open Shutter Doors and Vent Doors, T=-0.4 degC, D=-20 degC, Wind 2-4 m/sec from East, scattered thin cirrus. Primary mirror is starting out at -2.1 degC, so mirror ventilation is heating it. Telescope steel is fairly close to ambient.

18:55 Slew to zenith to put the DX M2 Swing arm in so that Doug can collect anemometer data in the "deployed" position. This is our new strategy to be sure that the wind doesn't blow for the rest of the week. smile Dave A. is rebalancing from Tucson.

For the second time, the reset encoders at EL=3 gave us a wrong zenith position of 90.06 (motor encoders) or 90.11 (strip encoders) for the position with stow pins lined up.

All active optics have been cleared from PSFL-M1 including Secondary Offload and Pointing Offsets.

19:21 pointto M5_1246 gs=0 TelM="ACQUIRE" PAM- -no star seen.

19:24 source ptspiral_irtc.csh - went around whole 4x4 arcmin grid without finding an M5 star.

19:33 slew to horizon to check the stow pin positions down there. We found the horizon stow pin indicators at +0.08 deg (strip encoders) or +0.06 (motor encoders).

19:37 elencreset 3 2 failed on first try.

19:38 Cleared residual Secondary Offload corrections and collimated M1 at horizon.

19:40 Wind (LBTO) is up to 10 m/sec, so I guess Doug gets some data after all.

19:50 slew to horizon to check the stow pin positions again. Now lineup is +0.05 deg (strip encoder) or +0.06 (motor encoder).

This slew put in a small, but non-zero amount of M2 offload on the primary.

Search manually in elevation, and found the star with IE=-122 CA=-57 (2 arminutes in EL from the nominal pointing model of IE=-4 CA=-69) but still with some coma.

20:06 Adding +5 arcsec RX means I need more negative IE (to move star back down on ACQUIRE image). Added at total of RX=+25 arcsec of M1 tip so that active optics has less raw coma to correct in a pointing-free manner. This moves us to IE=-170 with global offsets Z=+0.6 and RX=+25.

BS9122

20:13 pointto BS9122 gs=0 TelM="ACTIVE" PA=0 - found star in corner of acquisition image. GCS correctly identified it despite 3 arcsec FWHM and still slightly comatic.

This slew put in a small, but non-zero amount of M2 offload on the primary. That might have been correct for the few minutes since my last manual collimation update.

20:25 focus 0, After some collimation and focussing, the seeing is varying between 1.1 and 1.5 arcsec FWHM.

Telescope AZ=217 EL=53, IRTC wide field, Wind 4 m/sec (LBTO) from West. Guiding on with 4.6 sec exposures, and WFS is running. Seeing on guider is varying from 0.9 to 1.3 arcsec FWHM. Single frames accompanying the cubes have header information.
