Summary:

  • MCR rotator lockout problem at beginning of night - lost 3 hrs. IT# 1943
  • Only 2 EL encoders working IT# 1941
  • Initial collimation with new model is very poor - why?
  • Many problems with GCS losing guide thread (lost connection).
  • Oscillations seen on encoders, IT# 1940
  • Significant problems with GCS losing the guide thread. (Est. another 2h lost)

  • Verified isCollimated Flag works as expected
  • AGw Z-axis appears orthogonal
  • Field aberration measurements show little problems
  • Took 24 star pointing dataset.
  • Collimation corrections appear to be applied double, see below
  • 3a: With Z11/Z22 gains at zero we could collimate and not move the primary (all sent to secondary).
  • 3b: Under tonight's conditions you do not build up bending forces too rapidly.
  • Cannot edit the lbt.conf file in /lbt/tcs/17/etc/ unless you are root, 3c not done
  • Nominal AGw-LUCIFER focus should shift 1.956mm to 29.630 mm (will implement tomorrow)
  • Some astigmatism visible in LUCIFER images.

11:30 T=2.0, RH=21.2

16:30 Spoke with Torsten. Compile problems on oacserver code postpones this test until tomorrow.

17:30 T=2.5, RH=13.8 Wind is still around 15m/s from the LBT weather station.
It has been above 0C outside for ~9+ hours, hopefully that has fixed the blowing snow problem.

17:45 Motor Control Relay (MCR) lockout for rotator. A physical bypass of a faulty LUCIFER sensor applied on 02 Jan was apparently removed today. It is being replaced.

Not completely photometric at sunset. There are scattered thin cirrus around. Jet contrails persist for quite some time. T=2.7, RH=10.3, Wind ~13m/s average.

19:00 rotator MCR lockout diagnosis: a blown fuse. It is being changed out.

19:36 Everything working on MCR. Now getting R_HW fault - 3-phase power not on (done 17:45).

19:55 Dome open

20:12 Rising temps and pressures. T=4.5, RH=7.7%, P=690.7

20:15 Enclosure rotation problem (not enabled). "TPLC" error? Back up.

20:43 Encoder reset complete, EL encoder 0 is still disabled. Aaron's recommendation is to not do a pointing model with only the two EL encoders working.

  • 3 hr in total lost including the encoder reset that could not be done earlier.

20:45 Preset to BS9108 TRACK/PARALLACTIC for pointing correction IE changed from -14.91 to +97.0, CA went from -10.65 to +32

UT03:55:02 Preset from LUCIFER to BS9108 failed. It looked like a second preset overwrote the initial coordinates (05h RA instead of 03h). See Issue Trak #1939

Resent preset. Succeeded, but the guider saw a couple of significant jumps The sequence started at 21:03:59 and through a couple attempts ended a little after 21:12:00.

Cleared active optics and sent ACQUIRE mode through iraf, on axis. Huge coma and focus. Why? We are using the new multi-night LUCIFER collimation model with improved temperature coefficients, and it covers the current temperature. Global offsets applied +2 Y on M1 and M2 to bring Y into range, and 0.6mm in Z to focus.

Guiding window on GCS GUI is not updating but the WFS does see a star. The syslog keeps repeating:

Verified isCollimated Flag works as expected (off on presets and offsets and rms>400nm; on when the next WFS image is <400nm.)

21:47 MCS pre-processor algorithm verification (30 minutes):
  • Offsets 20 arcsec each NE 60, 120, 240, 600 arcsec
  • dawdle-snap seems gone, faster response

23:00:40 +/- a few seconds we had a significant jump in focus (2303nm)

Wed Jan 7 23:25:51.589 2009 IIF wouldn't stop. (but it shows as stopped on the TCSGUI). Kill did nothing. Manually stopped IRS, killed IIF, started IIF, started IRS. I can now authorize and preset from iraf as LUCIFER. Something has hung on the LUCIFER side, recovering.

IE changed to 110 from 97.

00:05 Moving to BS9122 Have to update pointing: CA=13, IE=80

00:22:03 Preset to BS9122 timed out after 300s. The MCSPU GUI disappeared. EL looks odd, executing wait_opr.

LUCIFER fits headers now OK

Nevermind - operator error (me), we forgot to restart application of the guiding offsets on PCS.

Restarted PCS and GCS, something odd is happening. No guide star because we forgot to re-enter IE and CA

Thu Jan 8 03:57:39.173 2009 Preset completed. Allow to collimate. GCS just stopped receiving images from AZcam after 1-2 cycles of the WFS. This is the third time in a row this has happened.

guiderimage002125-002134 in closed loop ACTIVE mode stop WFS, guiding, manually take:
  • lbtmu107:/tmp/guider000001-000005.fits at 37.587
  • lbtmu107:/tmp/guider000006-000010.fits at 25.587
  • lbtmu107:/tmp/guider000011-000015.fits at 31.587 all effectively TRACK mode
  • *No big shift between the +/-6mm focus positions (~3 pixels)

Verify collimation updates not double-applied:

But you probably don't want to run like this for more than an hour or so without a Z11 correction. The gains are changed by sending a manual correction of Z11 with the PSF Primary GUI. The manual corrections also allow changes of GAIN and FCIN along with the Zernike amplitude.

Seeing elongated images in the guider on-axis when the aberrations reported by WFS are low. Ran through focus a couple times and orientation does not change, so it is not astigmatism and probably vibrations we are seeing.

M1 total collimation did not change through several iterations of the WFS and EL is changing rapidly (setting straight west).

3a demonstrated that by setting the Z11/Z22 gains to zero, we could collimate everything else and not move the primary (all sent to secondary).

Additional information from JHill:

3b) Set the FCIN flags Z11 and Z22 to 1. This causes the focus correction to be implemented by bending the mirror rather than by repositioning. In stable conditions using it this way will be no problem, and you will get continuous Z11 and Z22 corrections. However, in conditions with rapidly changing mirror temperatures there is a problem that the mirror will run out of its allowed range of correction forces and panic. Bending in the focus uses more force than getting focus by moving the mirror.

3c) New in PSF 4.26 - Chris has installed a flag in lbt.conf that suppresses the focus correction for Z11 and Z22 corrections to M1. Setting leftZ4Comp to false will eliminate the focus part of the correction and apply only the minimum bending forces for Z11/Z22 to the mirror. This relies on the corrections from minute to minute being small so that the next active iteration will correct the residual focus error. We have not yet tested this on sky. This avoids the pitfalls of 3a and 3b above. It has the new pitfall that there could be a lag in the corresponding focus correction. I suggest running it in combination with Z11 and Z22 gains of 0.2 so that the corrections are applied slowly and therefore create only small focus changes.

If testing time on sky is limited. I suggest that we jump immediately to mode 3c with Z11/Z22 gains of 0.2. This is likely to be the new standard LUCIFER observing mode for spectroscopy if primary mirror jumps remain a problem.

Focus LUCIFER/AGW on sky (30-45 minutes/field):
  • Prerequisite: Stable atmospheric seeing
  • Use source list: Persson.cat, LUCIastrom.cat?
  • Select target at mid EL (50-70 degrees)
  • In an xterm: ssh agwuser@agw-control
  • Preset in ACTIVE mode using off axis guide star
    1. Offset, take sky frame, return to preset position
    2. Offset AGW focus stage (0, -6, 6, 0, -3, 3, 0 mm from nominal).
      To set the AGw focus position, on agw-control window type:
      1. getfocus
      2. setfocus -p NN.nnn (absolute position in mm)
    3. Take min 30s exposure to average over seeing
    4. Repeat steps 2-3 stepping through focus sequence
    5. Derive best focus position (millimeters)

Active Optics Jump Tests (2hr)
  1. Start with a faint guide source at around 80 degrees. In closed loop (active optics + guiding) demonstrate the jumps. The guide source should be selected so that 5 second exposures are possible without saturating the detector. (15 minutes ACTIVE mode)

  1. Open both the guiding and active optics control loops. GCS must still report centroid positions. This data will serve as an open-loop baseline observation. GCS centroid data should be collected for 15 minutes (around 150 GCS updates). (ACTIVE mode, stop WFS, block guiding)

  1. See next test. Take 5 minute data (2 sec LUCIFER images) in GUIDE mode

Verification of Guiding Performance:
  • Take 5 min data (2 sec LUCIFER exposures) in GUIDE mode
  • Compare with the ACTIVE mode

Measure/Correct LUCIFER rotation angle (15-30 minutes/field):
  • Use source list: LUCIastrom.cat (any field with lots of stars in USNO-B1)
