Commissioning Notes from 18-19 May 2008 MST

Summary

Rotated WFS by the correct amount, verified improved closed loop performance. Showed convergence from 4000 nm of applied Z7 in two iterations, 6000 nm of applied Z4 in several iterations, mixed modes giving ~ 2000nm aberration in several iterations. Seems to work pretty well, converges to ~+/- 50 nm on z4-z11, and this in seeing ranging from 1.5"-2.5". Also we can see a way to improve on this without too much more effort.

Went off-axis and verified that the focus off-set calculated (between off-axis star and IRTC, from field curvature) is approximately correct, and that the pupil shift on the WFSC with field angle is approximately as calculated (~+/-10% of where it should be).

Started to determine orientation of y-axis of AGW stage in PM coordinates when we were stopped by bad weather and multiple GCS failures.

3:05 Randy reopens issuetrak 1236 HBS failure, working again now

3:20 seeing 1.5" humidity 36% temp 10C, wind zero, star was way out of focus, applied 3 microns of Z4 to global offset

3:33 acquired star on guider, took two images in 080518w directory (wfsc000114-5), now changing directory to 080519w and starting again... images from wfsc00002-12 good convergance, sorted out coefficients on z9, z10

3:52 taking through focus images, trying first on guide camera guider 06 was 1sec exposure, guider 07 was 5 sec exposure. defocussing guide camera, didn't work, defocussing with M1

4:07 guider 12 was 6000 nm Z4, guider13 12000nm z4 guider14 will be 18000nm 40s exposure

4:10 guider 16 -6000 nm Z4, 20s exp, guider 17 -12000 z4 , 20s exp, guider 18 -18000 40s exp, guider 19 in-focus 2 s exp, all guider images are in \Repository\AGW_Data\080519g

4:17 going back to focus, re-acquiring guiding and running ActO for a few iterations to clean up image prior to through focus images on IRTC

4:35 went back to guiding, telescope was still well-collimated after 20 minutes, tweaked it a little, then going to take through focus images on IRTC.

4:49 BS9153, now moved to BS9155 about 15 degree elevation move re-check collimation, having trouble acquiring guide star, OAC server spits, re-sending guide command worked

5:02 checked collimation after 15 degree elevation move, mostly in elevation, apart from focus term everything else was within ~100 nm of where it was at most, going back to BS9153, re-setting collimation

5:04 OAC server spits again.

5:06 re-acquired, WFS shows ~200 nm Z8 from ~ 15 degrees elevation change, WFSC000013 one iteration drove everything down well, now going to IRTC star, ACT0226

5:10 can't find ACT0226, goign to WC10_226 at el 61.

5:14 applying +6000 z4 , taking 40X 0.5s exposures, images located in /Repository/IRTC_Data/080519 EF_00001_cube.fit on up to 40.

5:20 applying another +6000 z4, taking 30X 1s exposures, images from 0002_cube had the wrong (1/2 second) exposure, so the images we were after are in 00003.

5:23 taking another +6000 step, taking 10X 3s exposures, cube 00004, seems to be a little coma in the image.

5:26 going to focus, then -6000 Z4. taking 40X 0.5s exposures, cube 00005

5:28 another -6000 (total -12000z4) taking 30X 1 s exposures, cube 00006

5:35 total z4 now -18000, taking several sets of 6X 5s exposures, cirrus affected. cube 00007 has 5s exposures 60x by mistake, cube 00008 is as advertized.

5:45 seeing gone down to 2", gone back to focus and WFS star to check collimation

5:50 pointto "BS9153"

5:51-6:03 wfsc image 20-24 zernikes sent to primary

6:55 so have demonstrated that the system is robust enough to converge when starting from significant aberrations, in particular the most common "start-up" aberrations Z4, 7 and 8. On-axis WFS seems to be working satisfactorily for now, though there is room for some finessing (eg. not sending any but focus and coma when wavefronts are extremely aberrated, now for some off-axis stuff....

7:24 with a little help from John, got off-axis guiding going, off-axis guide star ~230" off-axis. Images in IRTC and guide camera.

wfsc000056 shows the pupil shift for 230" off-axis. Calculated pupil shift was 23 pixels, measured pupil shift was 27 pixels, so about right there.

8:35 WFSC63- for closing loop on guidestar (GS) 1. Once we have closed loop seeing "off-the-scale" (>3") but our blobs in the 3" square WFS images are about 1/3rd the diameter so there is some doubt about the Polaris monitor accuracy really.

8:40 now collimation achieved for guide star 4.8' off-axis. IRTC image looks like **. See M5_1459_00012 now we send -2225 nm focus which is the off-set from Zemax for the field curvature. New block of IRTC images is M5_1459_00014 (100 images). Looks ok.

9:07 Seeing total crud, so giving up on WFS at the moment, going to trying to work out the angle the y-axis of the agw stage is in primary mirror coordinates

9:35 Going to new star in East to minimize rotator motion. M5_0835

9:42 Rotator not getting tracking polynomials

10:07 GCS stuck multiple times, but doesn't really bother us at the moment as thick cloud has blanketed the sky

10:18 multiple failures trying to get off-axis guiding, failures once commands are sent to move stage. Can't make it work by re-starting GCSL.

10:29 error message "TCS authorize command failed for left IRTC at bent Gregorian focus" in IIF at 3:28:47 local time. Stopped and restarted CSQ multiple times to no avail.

10:40 restarting everything to see if that helps.

11:06 acquired stars.

11:07 lost stars, probably to clouds

11:20 closed dome at 11:21 with everything seemingly working again but clouds rolled in.
