LGS Operations at Keck I

Hosted by Randy Campbell at Keck HQ in Waimea.

  • Solid-state laser, on-axis launch, pulsed, ~23 Watts at source (Keck II still dye and side-launch).
  • 0.5 deg KoC
  • Free-space propagation through several mirrors (laser source on Nasmyth platform).
  • 45 minutes app to get all loops ready for science. Start with NGS loop on a bright star.
  • One telescope operator (Observing Assistant) and one support astronomer.
  • CFHT All-sky camera: http://www.cfht.hawaii.edu/~asiva
  • Ask Paul Stomski for contact person with Flight Explorer.
  • To measure sodium layer thickness: segments are tilted to create 36 spots. Outer segments spots will show elongation for a 5 meter offset from central spot.
  • Sodium layer altitude calculated from focus measurements.
  • Testing was done to check for interference between TBAD and radios, wireless, A/C, etc.
