20190820 Investigation of 4D data

Initial conclusions:
  • The shape applied to the AdSec is seen by the 4D. At least the overall shapes are the same but amplitude, noise (tip/tilt noise) and rotation have not yet been investigated.
  • The shapes in the applied disturbance files are mirror modes. However, there are a couple of quetion about these shapes:
    • We see that there is a pure Tilt (mode 4) but not a pure Tip (mode3). Mode 3 has mostly tip but also some astigmatism. Should mode 3 be a pure Tip?
    • We see modes 0 and 2 are pure astigmatism but mode 1 is a combination of astigmatism and tip. Is this correct?
    • We have yet to check higer order modes to see if Tip/Tilt or Astigmatism shapes are inclued, or other lower order modes.

Images
  • 4D Image: The image with ~1000x1000 array, and labeled 4D, are mirror shapes measured with the 4D.
    • Top left: Stacked image (for low order this is 125 frames, less for higher order modes)
    • Bottom left: The Tip/Tilt shape fit to the measured data, which will be removed from the measured shape
    • Bottom right: The measured image with T/T removed
    • Top right: The measured image with T/T and Astigmatism removed

  • Mirror Modes: The ~100x100 array images, labeled at Mode # Plus, are the commanded mirror shape found in the distrubance file create by the Influence Function data collection routine i4d_opt_intmat.pro
    • The Plus and Minus labels indicate a command frame with a positive and negative amplitude, respectively, mirror mode shape. The sum of a Plus and Minus applied shape should be ~0.0. For the low order modes we have checked this is true.
    • Top left: Command mirror mode shape
    • Bottom left: Sum of a postive and negative amplitude mirror mode (should and is ~0)
    • Bottom right: Mirror mode command with Tip/Tilt removed
    • Top right: Mirror mode command with Tip/Tilt and Astigmtism removed

Questions:
  • We see that there is a pure Tilt (mode 4) but not a pure Tip (mode 3). Mode 3 has mostly tip but also some astigmatism. Should mode 3 be a pure Tip?
    • In both the 4D and Commande image with TT removed (bottom right) for Mode 3 we see astigmatism
    • There is no Astigmatism in the Mode 4 images (bottom right)
    • An addition image of Mode 3 with only Astigmatism removed. What looks like a pure Tip is left.
  • We see modes 0 and 2 are pure astigmatism but mode 1 is a combination of astigmatism and tip. Could this be correct?
    • In the 4D and Command images with TT removed (bottom right) for Modes 0, 1 and 2 we see astigmatism.
    • In the 4D and Command images with TT and Astigmatism removed (top right) for Modes 0, 1 and 2 we see no astigmatism. This implies that there are three frames of mirror mode shapes with Astigmatism even though only two are needed if they are orthogonal. This implies that the three astimgatism frames are linear combinations of the two orthogonal Astigmatism shapes. Is this expected for the calculation of theroretical mirror modes? Does this imply that even though we measure, say, 600 modess that a KL basis set with only 599 orthogonal modes can be determined? Could there be other modes with this problem?

I have not looked at how Theoretical Mirror Mode shapes are calculated. My understanding is that the feed-forward matrix is used in this calculation.
