ARGOS CalUnit (20170509)

The performance results below are from measurement taken with the ARGOS CalUnit.

We collected AO Telemetry data and LUCI images for bin 1, 300 mode and 400 mode reconstructors. The results listed below show a slight decrease in Strehl for the 400 mode reconstructor compare to the 300 mode reconstructor.

The loop parameters were similar in both cases, with the loop gains determined via the Optimize Gain routine.

A 0.8" seeing disturbance was applied to the AdSec. Note, this 0.8" seeing disturbance file was calculated for the RetroReflector so with the single pass ARGOS CalUnit we are actually applying only half of the disturbance to the wavefront. This can be seen in the tables below where the Open Loop Seeing (OL) is reported to be slightly less than 0.4".

RetroReflector (20170510)

The results below are from data collected with the RetroReflector

From the very start of the day a large amount of vibrations at 14 and 15 Hz could be seen both in the AO Telemetry data and via OVMS.

We turned off all treehouse fans and found the 14 Hz vibrations decreased in both the AO and OVMS data, but it and the 15 Hz vibrations still impacted AO Close Loop Performance. We also turned off the power to the cube stages, linear and rotational, but no changes were measured.

Note, we collected LUCI1 data when using the RetroReflector with the P_Beta filter at 1.28 um rather the FeII filter at 1.64 um used with the ARGOS CalUnit because apparently the Retro Cube is opaque at 1.64 um and no FeII light is seen on LUCI1. The decrease in Strehls measured with the RetroReflector compared to the ARGOS CalUnit can partially be attributed to the shorter wavelength.

However, in closed loop with the RetroReflector the T/T gain (0.7) was significantly lower than the T/T gain (1.3) set for the ARGOS CalUnit. This lower gain was determined by the Optimize Gain routine and was confirmed by manually increasing the T/T gain and seeing the CCD39 pupils flash back and forth as T/T started to overdrive.

It is clear that we need to find and reduce the source of the vibrations so we may measure better reconstructors for the SX AO System.
